Is there any freeware software that will help me make a school yearbook for elementary school aged children?

I work in an inner city. We have no funds to buy anything except for some of the the printing/binding costs. Last year I used Word and it was such a pain. We have access to Kid Pix but i have never used it and don’t know if it does that kind of work. If it was cheap shareware, i would buy it but i don’t want too spend much money becuase much of this cost comes out of my pocket. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
