Im looking to buy a mobile computer what software do I need and what is the minimum hardware required?

Im looking to buy a mobil computer to take to school and take notes and maybe do my homework between classe. Im in college. I read a report on how to purchase a computer and it said that my first step is to find out what software I need? How do I know this?

how do you upgrade the laptop harddrive without reinstalling win xp and applications software?

I have an HP laptop with 100gb of harddrive. I bought a 160gb harddrive for the laptop but do not want to reinstall win xp or the apps software.
