I want to learn more about desktop publishing and graphic design and play around with some software. Can anyone recommend some good and somewhat easy software?

What software do artist use to draw characters on a computer?

I know there must be some software used to draw characters on websites??
or am i the only one who finds it effing hard to draw using a mouse??
