What is the current, most effective way to secure my commercial software from being pirated?

I’d prefer free software solutions for this. I need a licensing system that ties the license to the buyer’s computer.

  • Software will always be pirated. No matter what scheme you come up with.. it will be hacked (Given its good software). Some people will be good, and will buy the software, and others will just hack it. Look at MS, adobe, etc etc.. all of them have HUGE ways of verifying software.. even autodesk (makers of autocad) used to ship “hardware locks” to keep software “locked down” to a computer.. and those were quickly hacked.

Find a simple solution for implementing some kind of algorithm that accepts a key.. I doubt there is anything open source, because if people can see the source to this, they can likely VERY QUICKLY hack it (tho, I’m sure I’ll eat my words.. some OSS guy out there made something….).

Regardless, my point is, implement a simple security key code system. No matter how good the security is, it will be hacked. Don’t **** off your users who pay for the software by making it a pita to use it (see MS windows activation…).

    Just my 2 cents :-D
